In the fast-paced world we live in, there is something truly magical about gathering around a table and sharing a meal with loved ones. This is the essence of Relish Mama’s founder, Nellie Kerrison – a beautiful lady who celebrates honest everyday cooking and the joy it brings to one’s life.

Relish Mama began with a simple dream in 2009. With a leap of faith, Nellie sent an email to friends and family, sharing her desire to teach people how to cook, share recipes, and create memorable dining experiences together. The response was overwhelming, and the first cooking class sold out within seconds. Surrounded by love and support, she knew she was onto something special.

Starting a business from home was not without its challenges. Juggling a growing enterprise, licences, permits, and the needs of a young family required determination and passion. But the hard work paid off, and Relish Mama’s popularity soared. It became a place where thousands of amazing people gathered to cook, share stories, and forge friendships.

In 2012, Relish Mama found a new home—a beautiful warehouse space that now houses the cooking school. Every morning, as the founder walks up the stairs, she is reminded of the warm and inviting space that embodies the spirit of her beloved family and home. The success of Relish Mama has been fueled by the incredible support of its guests, many of whom have become loyal supporters, returning again and again with their loved ones. It’s a testament to the magic that happens around the shared table.

Relish Mama is all about celebrating the everyday. It’s about cherishing the simplicity of honest ingredients and the connections formed through food. Over the years, the business has evolved, introducing overseas food and wine tours that allow participants to explore culinary delights in places like Italy, Portugal, and Morocco. Although the pandemic temporarily halted these tours, they are set to resume in September 2023, starting with an enchanting trip to Tuscany.

To give you a taste of what Relish Mama has to offer, here’s a recipe from their collection: Balsamic Roasted Pears with Lentils, Blue Cheese & Hazelnuts. This delightful dish combines the sweetness of pears with the earthy flavours of lentils, the creaminess of blue cheese, and the crunch of toasted hazelnuts. It’s a perfect balance of textures and tastes that will elevate any dining experience.

Balsamic Roasted Pears with Lentils, Blue Cheese & Hazelnuts Serves 4

Ingredients
  

  • 4 Pcs Medium pears, washed and skin on (Beurre Bosc work well in this dish)
  • 2 Tablespoons Extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 Tablespoons Balsamic vinegar
  • 2 Teaspoons Caster sugar
  • 250 Grams Lentils
  • 2 Cups Rocket leaves
  • 80 Grams Hazelnuts (Toasted)

To Serve

  • 1 Tablespoons Extra virgin olive oil
  • 200 Grams Blue cheese of your choice (but make it a good one)
  • Sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  • Cut the pears into large slices and place them in a baking dish with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, the balsamic vinegar and the sugar.
  • Toss gently to coat. Roast for approximately 20 minutes or until the pears are golden. Set aside to cool.
  • Place the lentils in a large pan of water. Bring to the boil, reduce heat to medium and simmer for 20 minutes or until lentils are cooked. Drain and set aside.
  • Place the pears, lentils, rocket and hazelnuts in a large bowl and toss gently to combine. Season with salt and pepper and drizzle with a little olive oil.
  • Crumble the cheese over the top and serve warm.
